EMS Module Overview

Within the switch chassis is the embedded management switch (EMS). The EMS is an Ethernet switch paired with an ARM-based management controller in a single module. By default, the EMS does not require user management. However, it is a feature-rich Ethernet switch and has functionality comparable to, and is managed similarly to, Oracle's ES1 and ES2 switches.

The management controller for the EMS is the switch's SP. The management controller is a host that runs a minimized version of the Sun Ethernet Fabric Operating System (SEFOS). You administer the EMS from a CLI using SEFOS commands. You access SEFOS through the Oracle ILOM CLI.

The EMS implementation of SEFOS has these interactive modes:

  • Privileged EXEC mode – Displays parameters of the network and configuration.

  • Global Configuration mode – Configures parameters and values across the network.

  • Interface Configuration mode – Configures parameters for a specific interface or port.

  • VLAN Configuration mode – Configure parameters for a specific VLAN upon VLAN creation.

Each mode has its own specific commands.

The modes are nested, so to configure parameters across the network, you first enter Privileged EXEC mode, then Global Configuration mode. To configure parameters for a specific interface, you first enter Privileged EXEC mode, then Global Configuration mode, and finally, Interface Configuration mode. To configure parameters for a new VLAN, you first enter Privileged EXEC mode, then Global Configuration mode, and finally, VLAN Configuration mode. Exiting the modes are nested as well.
