Install DIMMs

Before you begin, see DIMM Population Rules for information about DIMM configuration guidelines.

Caution

Caution  - Ensure that all power is removed from the server before installing DIMMs or damage to the DIMMs might occur. You must disconnect all power cables from the system before performing this procedure.

  1. Unpack the new or replacement DIMMs and place them on an antistatic mat.
  2. If you are replacing faulty DIMMs, ensure that the replacement DIMMs match the sizes of the DIMMs they are replacing.

    Do not replace a dual-rank DIMM with a quad-rank DIMM and vice versa. If you violate this rule, the performance of the server might be adversely affected. For DIMM population rules, see DIMM Population Rules.

  3. Ensure that the ejector tabs are in the open position.
  4. Line up the DIMM with the motherboard connector.

    Align the notch in the DIMM with the key in the connector. The notch ensures that the DIMM is oriented correctly.

  5. Push the DIMM into the connector until the ejector tabs lock the DIMM in place.

    If the DIMM does not easily seat into the connector, verify that the notch in the DIMM is aligned with the key in the connector. If the notch is not aligned, damage to the DIMM might occur.

  6. Repeat Step 3 through Step 5 until all replacement DIMMs are installed.
  7. Consider your next step:
    • If you installed DIMMs as part of another procedure, return to that procedure.

    • If you are only installing new or replacing faulty DIMMs, continue to the next step.

  8. Install the media bay assembly.

    See Install the Media Bay Assembly.

  9. Install the air duct.

    See Install the Air Duct.

  10. Return the server to operation.

    See Returning Server to Operation.

  11. If you replaced faulty DIMMs, clear the server DIMM faults.
    1. To see server faults, log in to the ILOM SP as root and type the following ILOM CLI command list all known fault on the system:

      -> show /SP/faultmgmt

      The server lists all known faults, for example:

      -> show /SP/faultmgmt
        Targets:
            0 (/SYS/MB/P0/D2)
        Properties:
        Commands:
            cd
            show

    2. To clear the fault, type the following command:

      -> set /SYS/MB/Pn clear_fault_action=true

      Where Pn is the DIMM number. For example, to clear a fault on the DIMM in location D2 on CPU0:

      -> set /SYS/MB/P0/D2 clear_fault_action=true
      Are you sure you want to clear /SYS/MB/P0 (y/n)? y
      Set ???clear_fault_action” to ???true???
