SNMP Client Overview (Oracle ILOM Web)

The switch has an SNMP client that supports SNMP v1, v2c, and v3. SNMP v3 is enabled by default because it is more secure than either v1 or v2c.

For SNMP v3, which is the default:

  • SNMP users control user authentication and authorization. Communities do not.

  • The user management (u) role in Oracle's roles model is required to configure users.

  • For SNMP set requests, v3 users require read-write privilege.

  • To receive and decode v3 traps, the SNMP user name must be configured in Oracle ILOM. If not, the switch receives v3 traps, but they cannot be decoded.

For SNMP v1 and v2c, which are disabled by default because they are much less secure than v3:

  • SNMP communities control user authentication and authorization. Users do not.

  • The user management (u) role in Oracle's roles model is required to configure SNMP communities.

  • For SNMP set requests, communities require read-write privilege.
